Drain and rinse the soaked beans. Add them to your slow cooker along with the diced onion and sliced sausage.
Pour in the broth and add the garlic powder, liquid smoke, hot sauce, and black pepper. Stir to combine everything evenly.
Cook on low for 8 hours or high for 4-5 hours, until beans are tender and flavors have melded. (If you prefer a thicker consistency, remove the lid for the last hour of cooking to let excess liquid evaporate.)
Taste and adjust seasoning. Serve hot with cornbread and additional hot sauce on the side.
