There's a fun tradition I have with my brother Joey (yes there are two full-time Joeys in my life now lol) where we get together and eat something that our wives hate. Yes, it's a real act of rebellion! It's our night to "go wild" and have some beers, play original Nintendo video games (specifically this one: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tec...), and most importantly, make and eat Sloppy Joes. It's something I had a kid, always loved, and then never had again for 20+ years and then just started making them with my brother when we both proclaimed our love for one of the the most underrated sandwiches of all time.

We make it different every time and there's no family recipe for this one ha. It's more of recent tradition that I can see us doing forever. We often make it with ground turkey and wheat buns to try to make it healthier but it's best with ground beef and regular sesame seeded hamburger buns.

Here's an easy recipe that you could try!

  • 1½ pounds
    extra lean ground beef

Combine the ground beef and onion in a cold skillet, place the skillet onto a stove burner, and turn the heat to medium; cook and stir until the beef is crumbly and browned. Stir the garlic and bell pepper into the beef mixture; continue cooking and stirring until the vegetables are tender, 2 to 3 more minutes. Add 1 cup of water. Mix in ketchup, brown sugar, Dijon mustard, Worcestershire, salt, and pepper. Pour in 1 more cup of water. Bring to a simmer. Reduce heat to low and cook until the mixture becomes very thick, 30 to 45 minutes. Adjust salt and pepper as needed. Season with cayenne.
