Great as a main-dish or as a side. Try adding chickpeas, peas, cauliflower, or broccoli to mix things up. Even try some red pepper flakes to spice things up.
Prepare macaroni as label directs; Drain.
Preheat oven to 350 F. Grease 2-quart casserole.
In small saucepan over medium heat melt 2 tablespoons butter or margarine; add bread crumbs and toss to coat. Set aside.
Meanwhile, prepare cheese sauce:
1. In 2-quart saucepan over medium heat, melt remaining butter or margarine; add onion an cook until tender, about 5 minutes.
2. Stir in flour, salt, mustard, and pepper until blended; cook 1 minute.
3. Gradually stir in milk; cook until mixture thickens slightly and is smooth, stirring constantly. Remove from heat and stir in cheese until melted.
4. Remove from heat and stir in cheese until melted.
Place drained macaroni in casserole. Pour cheese sauce over macaroni. Sprinkle reserved crumb mixture over top.
Bake for 20 minutes or until bubbly and crumbs are golden. Serve.
